Commercial and residential approval scores and permitting ranks for all 50 states.

Looking for the overall state ranking? On July 10, 2026 we split the permitting index from the general state ranking into two separate indices. This page now carries the permitting detail; the composite 50-state ranking you may have seen cited elsewhere lives in the Red Tape 50 index. No data was removed, and every previously published value remains available.

Approval performance is published as 0-100 scores derived from statewide permit records, split by property type - higher means faster, more predictable approvals. The Final Score is the same Approval metric shown in the Red Tape 50 state table (lower is faster on that scale). Underlying processing durations and record volumes are part of our proprietary dataset and are available to partners on request.
